Meade US-54 (Plains)

Passing lane addition on US-54 leading to Plains, KS.

What We Did

Scope of Work

J&R added passing lanes across 1.5 miles of US-54 east of the Seward/Meade county line, extending into Plains, Kansas. Crews placed 29,430 tons of asphalt on a $6.5 million contract. The project ran from March 2025 through April 2025.

An active bridge repair project sat between J&R's asphalt plant and the paving site, with a traffic signal running alternating one-way traffic across the bridge. The bottleneck would have cut production in half if J&R had kept the standard truck count.

To maintain production rates and keep the paving crew supplied, the haul truck fleet was increased by 50% for the duration of the project. The decision protected the schedule and let the crew finish on time despite a constraint that had nothing to do with the paving work itself.
